Embroidery and Textile Trends for the Collection Spring/Summer 2023

“Pre-Loved” Material by studio sarmite, embroidered with fluorescent POLY thread by Gunold. Design: Luisa Schmid, Embroidery: Irene Körting, Reutlingen University

„The times they are a changin“ – it is still so true and we all are part of this global process. Corona is also having its impact on the developments: some processes are slowed down, others are accelerated by the pandemic. Politic as well as social changes are influencing all areas of our life and are affecting of course also our textile world. Lets throw a glance at the trends in embroidery and textile decoration for the spring-summer collection 2023:

Nature meets hightech – a contrast which makes fashion attractive and exciting. Here we see natural mother of pearl buttons, sewn with a neon coloured polyester thread.

We’ll find organic structures in print and embroidery design – often realized in natural sand, brown and red hues.

3d looks remain a strong topic, realized either with special 3d foams and techniques or by arranging several embroidery layers.

This embroidery work by Irene Körting from Reutlingen University looks like a contemporary gobelin:

Using the elaborate features of the digitizing software helps generating an intriguing 3D look, even if the embroidery itself is completely flat.

New life is breathed to classical or traditional patterns by applying them on non-typical fabrics or by using unusual techniques.

Another usage of layering techniques is to stitch a thin transparent monofilament thread on top of a „normal“ embroidery designs.

Fringes and loops will be seen in the collections in a contemporary context. The sample shows embroidered flowers in fringe technique. The modern appearance is achieved by using both reflective fabric and thread.

More and more innovative sustainable fabrics and accessories can be found in the new collections. Organic cotton embroidery thread applied on peace silk, to name a few.

Worth mentioning also sustainable fabrics and materials made of post-consumer and / or  post-industrial waste. The pictures here show samples embroiderd on the wonderful „pre-loved“ material, using copper and neon coloured effect threads.

Established fashion brands as well as innovative start-ups understood the value of effect seams. They attract attention, highlight a garment and proof how much love for detail is put into the production process. Attractive threads and stitch types create a unique appearance and bring that certain something to the garment…
